Professional Path - PLAR

The Professional Path to the CITP* is for individuals with previous educational or professional experience in the field of international trade. Through FITT’s Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process you can obtain credit(s) toward the FITTskills program.

 Choose & Complete Your Assessment

  • Portfolio Submission - A Portfolio submitted to FITT is a record of your learning; gained from work experience, personal development and/or education as it relates to international trade competencies. The Portfolio is developed by you to support your claim of competence and request for credit(s) toward the CITP* designation.

OR

  • Challenge Exam(s) - You can challenge a FITTskills course for credit at anytime by completing the course assessment (exam or project), without undertaking any in-class or online learning. Challenge Exams cover the learning objectives of the course you are challenging. Each assessment submission is reviewed by FITT using the same criteria as individuals undertaking the course through the classroom or online. For detailed information and Q&A, please click here.

 Professional Exam?

If you have achieved seven or eight educational credits through accredited courses or portfolio assessments, you will be required to successfully complete the Professional Examination**—a closed-book, 3-hour exam involving a case study and essay format questions. There is no mark assigned for the exam, simply a pass or fail grade. Once you have successfully completed the Professional Exam, you will receive your FITT Diploma, and will have completed the educational requirements for the CITP*.

If you have achieved six or less credits through PLAR, you will need to locate a FITT educational partner near you to complete the remaining courses. Please note that students with seven transferred courses, who have successfully completed the professional exam, must still complete their eighth FITTskills course in order to achieve their FITT Diploma.

**Professional Exam Exemptions
Any student who successfully completes two FITTskills assessments (exam or project), or more, will be exempt from writing the Professional Exam.

Complete, or prove, twelve (12) months of related professional experience

Application of knowledge is just as important as learning. Each student or professional must complete a minimum of 12 months of full-time, professional experience in a position where the majority of their responsibilities involve importing and/or exporting related tasks.

To see if your experience qualifies, please contact us at membership@fitt.ca.

Prepare your application and apply online

Once you have completed your academic training and professional experience prerequisites, you can begin to prepare your application. Applying for your CITP* requires the submission of a detailed and up-to-date résumé along with the submission of two contactable sponsors (such as supervisors or clients) who can attest to your experience. Following submission, your application will be reviewed for approval.
