International Business Certification—Professional Path to the CITP Designation

The Professional Path to the Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation is the ideal solution for you if you already have educational or professional experience in the field of international business. Through FITT’s Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process you can obtain credits toward the FITTskills program.

If you have more than 10 years of professional experience in international business, you may be eligible to apply for the CITP designation through our Executive path.

Step 1: Submit a Portfolio
Your portfolio must provide a record of your learning gained from education, work experience and/or professional development, as it relates to our international trade competencies (PDF). You can develop and submit your portfolio to earn credit(s) toward the FITTskills program and the CITP designation.

Step 2: Professional Examination
If you’ve taken all 8 FITTskills courses then you’re exempt from writing the Professional Examination.

Verify whether or not you need to write the Professional Examination. View our Credentials page, or contact us at info@fitt.ca.

Step 3: Complete, or Prove, 12 Months of International Business Experience
The application of your international business knowledge is just as important as acquiring it. So, to apply for your CITP designation, you must complete a minimum of 12 months of professional experience in a position where the majority of your responsibilities relate to international trade.

To see if your experience qualifies, review our professional experience requirements, or contact us at membership@fitt.ca.

Step 4: Prepare Your Application and Apply Online
Once you’ve met the educational and experiential requirements for the CITP designation, you can prepare your CITP application. Submit a detailed and up-to-date CV and contact information for two individuals who can attest to your global business experience, such as clients, colleagues or supervisors.
